Can you swim in Melissani Cave?

The short version: no. Swimming in Melissani is not allowed, and every listing on this site says so in its own notes. The lake is a UNESCO Geopark geosite, the water is brackish and up to thirty-odd metres deep, and the only way onto it is a shared rowing boat. The swim comes afterwards: Antisamos is ten minutes from Sami, Myrtos about thirty, and three of the six tours build a beach into the day.

Why not

The lake is the exhibit. It is geosite 25 of the Kefalonia–Ithaca Geopark, brackish sea water that crossed the island underground from Argostoli, with the water about 20 m below the ground surface and the sanctuary islet in the middle. Twelve-person rowing boats with a boatman are the visit, ten to fifteen minutes each. The listings say it plainly: swimming is not permitted. Where the water comes from.

Where you can swim the same day

Antisamos is 4.7 km and ten minutes from Sami, the obvious pairing with a car. Myrtos is about 18 km and thirty minutes from Sami; most coach tours stop at the viewpoint above it for the photograph rather than going down. Makris Gialos is on the Argostoli and Lassi side, near where the tours start.

Three tours include a swim. The lake-and-beach tour from Argostoli, about five hours, gives roughly an hour and a half at Makris Gialos with the operator’s umbrellas, which reviewers mention more than anything else about it; it skips Drogarati and includes the Melissani ticket. The semi-private van from the cruise terminal swims at Myrtos or Antisamos, chosen on the day. The private car ends with a swim at Myrtos at whatever hour you choose. Bring swimwear and a towel; the van’s own listing says so. What to bring.
