You show or buy the ticket at the top, walk down a sloping tunnel with roughly a hundred steps, and wait on the pier for a boat. The boats hold about twelve people and a boatman, who rows you round the open chamber, pulls the boat by a rope through the narrow passage into the closed stalactite chamber, and brings you back. Ten to fifteen minutes; reviewers at the ends of the range say it felt like five or twenty. Then the same hundred steps back up to the café, the toilets and the free car park. Thirty minutes is a fair total on a quiet morning, an hour if you stop on the viewing balcony above the open chamber and again at the café. What happens on the water, in order.
The queue is the only variable, and it is a large one. Reports from 2025 and 2026: 30 minutes typical in May and July, up to two hours between 12:00 and 14:00 in July 2026, an hour and a half or more when a ship is in at Argostoli. Adding Drogarati
Drogarati Cave is about five minutes’ drive away on the Sami–Argostoli road. It is self-guided, about 150 steep steps down and 15 to 20 minutes inside, so the two caves together are comfortably a morning, and a combined ticket for both costs a little more than Melissani alone.
